Translation
Translation is the act of conveying written text from one language to another. The meaning of the original (source) language must be maintained, as well as the right style and level of terminology for the intended audience. Depending on the subject matter and purpose, varying degrees of cultural adaptation might be needed to suit the destination (target) language.
I am a native English speaker and I translate from French and Spanish into English.
Certified Translation: In my capacity as a registered Chartered Linguist with the CIOL, I can provide certified translations from French into English. This is charged at an additional per page fee on top of translation or review of an existing translation that needs to be certified, plus postage costs for the hardcopy to be sent to you.
Editing & Proofreading
Editing: also referred to as revision, involves a full review of the already translated text against the original source text. Accuracy of translation, terminology, use of appropriate style, plus spelling and grammar will all be checked and corrected as necessary.
I can provide editing services from French and Spanish into English.
Proofreading: often interchangeable with editing and revision, but I use it to refer to monolingual proofreading of a text to check for spelling, grammar, clarity, readability and style.
I can provide proofreading services in English.
Quality & Compliance
Quality Assurance: this service can encompass a few different things depending on the project needs. For example, it may just be a light spelling/grammar, completeness and formatting check done in Word. Or it may entail cross-checking a translated text against the typeset / print-ready format to ensure everything is present and displaying correctly.
Because this does not necessarily require linguistic knowledge, I can offer this service in a wider range of European languages.
During my years working at the biggest global LSPs, I developed expertise in language services for European Medicines Agency marketing authorisation applications. I am fully up to date on Quality Review of Documents (QRD) requirements and can assist with the following services:
QRD Review: While I cannot perform any linguistic checks for the 24 EU languages, I can spot check against the QRD templates or verify template compliance for specific sections of text. I can perform a full formatting review and correction for compliance with QRD requirements (font size, paragraph spacing, non-breaking spaces, document layout and properties, etc.)
The rate for this service is based per page.
PDF Bookmarking: For any of the required 24 EU languages, I can create the bookmarked PDF from the clean Word document, as per the EMA PDF Bookmarking guidelines.
This service is based on a flat rate per document.
I am happy to assist with the QA and final package creation of annotated, clean Word documents and bookmarked PDFs for Day+25 submission. This will include: QRD format compliance; document properties; creation of clean Word and bookmarked PDF; file and zip folder naming as per EMA requirements.
Transcription
Transcription involves transferring speech in audio format to written format. There are different levels of transcription; from Verbatim, in which everything is transcribed exactly as said; to Intelligent Edited, in which the transcriber records a summary of what was said but can edit for readability. Various formats are possible, and transcripts may require timestamps, especially if they are going to be used for subtitling.
I offer monolingual transcription in French or in English, and one-step transcription from French to English. That means I listen to the audio in French and transcribe directly in English.
Technical Editing
I also offer Technical Editing for knitting & crochet patterns under my sister brand, A Certain Style. To find out more about this please visit www.acertainstyle.co.uk
